Phenomenal Boyz 11, Rappa Construction 10 |
|
In the opener of this best of three 50s A quarterfinal playoff
series Phenomenal Boyz won 11-10 over Rappa Construction. After five lead
changes, the Phenomenal Boyz clinched victory with a walk-off sac fly. Don
Sheehy went 3-for-3, while Tom Korezeneski, Vincent Cordaro, and Ray Luciano
each had two hits for Rappa Construction. |

In game one of the 50s A division semi-finals, Deegan came up
short and dropped a one run game to Rocky's. In this low scoring game,
Frank Mastrocola’s pitching prowess was backed up by the Barmen defense on
the hot corner by Gary Roman and Ellan Ben-Hayon’s total coverage in left
field. Rocky’s offense was led by Matt Walsh (3-3, 2 RBIs , 2 RS), Bob
Howlett (2-3) and Dave Martorano (2-4). In defeat the Roofers were led by
John Deitch with outstanding pitching and two hits. Charlie Collins, Tom Ulichny,
Mike Juchnik and Bone McMahon each contributed 2 hits each. |

On a hot, steamy, buggy night in picturesque Rahway River Park,
the Grillmeisters jumped out to a 13-1 lead after 3 innings and cruised to a
13-6 first round win in this best of three 50s B Division matchup. Leading
the way for the Barmen were fellow perfectionist’s Dr Rob Wallace 3-3,
winning pitcher Joe Sheridan 3-3, and Greg Thomas 3-3. Chipping in with 2
hits were Lloyd Haymes, Deuce Brown and Erik Hastrup, while Steve Halper had
a 3-run HR to open up the scoring in the first inning. Eddie Emgram hit a
pants dropping dinger in the bottom of the 3rd. Juan Pichardo and Richard Merette homered
for Sonia's BCE while Dionis Ramirez and Miguel Espin went 3-4. Edgar
Melendez, Efrain Gonzalez and Jose Perez added 2 hits apiece. |

Phenomenal Boyz

|
In a game where defense initially seemed poised to determine the
outcome, Rappa Construction limited Phenomenal Boyz to scoring during only
one of the first five innings, maintaining a 7-4 lead. However, momentum
shifted, resulting in an 8-8 tie entering the seventh inning. The Phenomenal
Boyz then secured the victory by scoring two runs in the seventh, finishing
the game with a 10-8 win and moving onto the semi-finals versus Douglas VW. For Rappa Construction
Kevin Robinson, Tom Korzeneski, Gerard Parisi, Ray Luciano, Steve
D'Amato, Miguel Ramos and Anderson Monzon had 2 hits each. |

In game two of the A division best of three semi-finals, Deegan
bounced back from a game one loss with a dominant performance to even the
series. Scott Mugele was a perfect 5-5 including a HR, while John Segledi,
Kevin Spellman, Ron Patterson, Billy Aumenta and Nelson Santiago all had four
hits each. Tom Ulichny and Ricky Bone McMahon (HR) each had perfect nights at
the plate, and John Deitch contributed 3 hits and a strong pitching
performance. |

Rocky’s Barmen could not maintain their tight level of play as
they did in game one, falling hard to the Roofers. The offense was led by
Laquan “Fu” Gray (4-4). Dave Grandmaison and Pete Abene both were 3-4, while
Craig Michaud, Larry Pacifico, and Tom DeGregorio had two hits apiece. |

In game three of the best of three semi-final series, Deegan
continued their torrid hitting by scoring 18 runs over the first three
innings to pull away from Rocky's and capture the series. For the Roofers Ron
Patterson was outstanding at shortstop with several highlight reel plays
while also contributing 3 hits. Mike Juchnick and Tom Ulichny were a perfect
4-4, while Charlie Collins, Donnie Perkins, Scott Mugele, Billy Aumenta and
Kevin Spellman each had 3 hits. John Deitch pitched another solid game and
contributed two hits and 3 RBI. Rocky’s solid season ended abruptly in
the series rubber match. Todd O’Reilly was perfect on the night (3-3) while
several others contributed with 2 hits including Matt Walsh, Craig Michaud,
Larry Pacifico, Dave Grandmaison and Pete Abene. |

On what could have passed as a fall night at lovely Tremley
Point, Echo Tap & Grille advanced to the B division semifinals with a
16-4 victory over Sonia’s BCE. After going down in the top of the 1st 1-2-3,
the Grillmeisters erupted for 6 runs in the top of the 2nd to take a 6-1
lead. The Barmen scored 5 over the next 2 innings to forge an 11-1 lead
before erupting for 5 runs in the 6th inning behind back-to-back HRs by Dr
Rob Wallace (Grand Salami) and Joe Sheridan's solo shot to break the game open.
Joe Sheridan had a perfect 4-4 night plus an outstanding performance on the
hill both pitching and defensively. Deuce Brown was perfect also (3-3). Dr
Rob Wallace and Lloyd Haymes had 2 two you had to see it to believe it
catches to go with their 3 hits apiece. Chris Paternostro also had 3 hits on
the night. Chipping in with 2 hits were Steve Halper (a Web Gem of his own),
and Ken Zeidner. Echo will now face B Division Regular Season Champions
Terawulf in the semifinals. |

|
In the first game of this best of three 50s B Semifinal series
at Memorial Park in Linden, Echo Tap & Grille jumped out to a 10-5
lead and continued to put up crooked numbers increasing their lead to 16-7
after 6 innings. Terawulf rallied with 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th but
came up short by a final score of 16-12. Leading the offense for the Barmen
was winning pitcher Joe Sheridan, who besides shining on the hill, was a
perfect 3-3 at the plate. Dr Rob Wallace (1-1 with 3 walks) was also on base
all night. Fellow Grillmeisters Lloyd Haymes (3-4), Steve Halper (3-4), Ken
Zeidner (2-3), Chris Paternostro (1-2 with a sac), and Greg Thomas (2-4 with
a booming triple) all had their hands in the offense all night. Echo Tap
& Grille takes a 1-0 lead in the semifinals. |

On a beautiful late summer night at Tremley Point in Linden,
Echo Tap & Grille advanced to the B division Finals to play Thirsty
Turtle by defeating Terawulf 11-2 in game 2 of this best of three series to
complete the sweep. Behind the pitching and hitting of Joe Sheridan,
crisp defense and several heads-up plays by the combination of Steve Halper
and Deuce Brown Echo Tap stifled the Terawulf offense. Dr Rob Wallace's 2 run
HR started off the scoring as Echo jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The score
remained 2-0 until the bottom of the 3rd, where the Barmen erupted for 6 runs
with 2 outs to forge an 8-0 lead. After an intentional walk to Dr Rob Wallace
to load the bases, Joe Sheridan delivered a 2 RBI single, Chris
Paternostro an RBI double, Kenny Zeidner an RBI single, and singles by Greg Thomas and Steve Halper to load the bases, Sean Dolan delivered the
dagger plating the 6th run with a single. The Grillmeisters offense was led by Lloyd Haymes (1-1, 3
BB), Roy Alexander (2-4), Dr Rob Wallace (2-3, HR), Joe Sheridan (2-4), Chris
Paternostro (2-3), Kenny Zeidner (1-2, BB), Steve Halper (2-3), Sean Dolan
(2-3), and Deuce Brown (2-3). |

Game one of the best of three 50s A semifinal series went to the
Douglas VW boys by a score of 18-9. The night's theme was called the
Justin Doyle show, as he went 4-4 with 3 HRs and 7 RBIs. He added added a
circus catch on the run in right center to end a P-Boyz rally. Others
having big nights for Douglas VW were Steve Steransak, who was a perfect 4-4,
while Lou Rivera and Chris Yee had 3 big hits each. Luke Nacca, Frank
Padovano and Al Genova (inside the park HR), all had 2 hits. On the
hill, Mario Fastiggi battled a strong wind and played solid defense to pick
up the win. |

It was a game that was controlled by Douglas VW for 6 plus
innings. All they needed was 3 more outs but that never happened as the
P-Boyz rallied for 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to walk off Douglas VW to force a final game of
this best of three 50s A semifinal series.
In the loss for Douglas, Chris Yee (HR) and Fernando Diaz both had
perfect nights going 4-4, while Lou Rivera added 3 hits. |

Still hung over from a walk off loss in game two of this best of
three 50s A semifinal series and facing elimination, the Douglas crew woke
from the dead to rally for a 16-14 victory over the Phenomenal-Boys to take
the rubber game and move on to the finals. Trailing by a score of 13-2
heading to the bottom of the 4th, the Dub bats woke up, scoring 14 runs over
the last 3 innings. Leading the comeback was Justin Doyle and Fernando Diaz,
each who were a perfect 4-4 on the night. Other big contributors were
Lou Rivera, Chris Yee, and Al Genova all contributing 3 hits. Steve
Steransak, Frank Padovano and Luke Nacca all had 2 hits on the night. Though
the defense was shaky early, Lou Rivera, Hector Munoz and Chris Morrison led
the late inning lockdown. Rich Gaul nailed down the final 3 innings in relief
to pick up the win. |

A beautiful early September night served as the backdrop for the
much-anticipated 50s B Division playoff final between two of the premier
Union County eating and drinking establishments. The night did not disappoint
as Echo Tap & Grille surged to a 16-10 victory, taking Game 1 of this
best of three championship series. The first 3 innings looked like a
pitcher’s duel as they produced only 1 run and a Thirsty Turtles 1-0 lead.
Echo erupted for 10 runs over the 4th and 5th innings led by HRs by Dr Rob Wallace and Chris
Paternostro to provide a 10-3 lead after 5. Both teams put up six runs in the
6th resulting in a 16-9 Echo lead. The Turtles put up 1 more in the 7th and
came up short to provide the final 16-10 score. The Barmen were led by Dr Rob
Wallace who had a perfect night 2/2 HR, 2 BB and Lloyd Haymes who was also a
perfect 4/4. Chipping in with 2 hits were Roy Alexander, Joe Sheridan, (who
again was stellar on the hill), Chris Paternostro HR, and Deuce Brown. Steve
Halper provided another web gem as well as 3 hits. |

Under threatening skies at Tremley Point before a packed house,
Echo Tap & Grille pounded out 28 hits to complete their Cinderella Story
playoff run and captured their first ever 50s B championship. Echo put up
crooked numbers in 5 of the 6 innings as they continued their torrid hitting
over their 6 playoff games. Echo was up 10-4 after 3 innings but Thirsty
Turtle put up 3 in the top of the 4th to narrow the gap to 10-7. Echo
answered with 4 in the bottom of the inning and then scored 11 runs over the
next 2 innings to forge the final score. Joe Sheridan pitched marvelously and
went an astounding 5/5 at the plate. The infield of Sean Dolan 3/3, Deuce
Brown 3/4, Erik Hastrup 3/5, and Chris Paternostro 4/4 were flawless in their
precision. Stellar outfield plays by Roy Alexander (2 hits), Lloyd Haymes
(3/5), Dr Rob Wallace (2/3, HR), Steve Halper (2 hits) shored up the Echo
defense. Catcher Ken Zeidner guided Joe Sheridan with a surgeon’s knife and
provided 3 hits, none bigger than his bases loaded triple. Greg Thomas and
Cruz Moctezuma provided a clear vision while coaching 1st and 3rd. The Barmen
close out the 2025 season on a 7-game winning streak. |

For the fifth year in a row, these two powerhouse squads meet in
the 50s "A" division best of
three finals, with the first game going to Douglas VW by a score of
12-11. In a game that was dominated through 4 innings by Deegan
Roofing, the Douglas V-Dubs rallied late to escape with a one run walk-off
win. Leading the way for VW was Chris Yee (4 for 4), Justin Doyle (3
hits), Al Genova (3 hits) and Chris Morrison (3 hits). Lou Rivera and Hector
Munoz also added 2 hits each. Rich Gaul picked up the win on the
hill. |

In game 2 of the best of three 50s A playoff championship, the
score board was lit up as both team combined for 39 runs and 7 lead changes.
In the end, Deegan Roofing walked off Douglas VW by a score of 20-19 to even
the series at one game each. In the loss for Douglas, Luke Nacca
led the offense with a perfect 4 for 4, plus Lou Rivera also has 4 hits.
The stat sheet was filled in a big way by Justin Doyle, who had 3
hits, including 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. Chris Morrison, Frank Padavano and
Fernando Diaz all added 3 hits, while Al Genova and Rich Gaul added 2 hits
each. |

In the final chapter of this series, which had been dead locked
all year, the Douglas V-Dubs played an almost perfect defensive game, as they
held the Deegan offense scoreless for the first 6 innings, winning by a score
of 19-1 to claim back to back UCSSL 50s “A” division championships. The
offense struck early and often, led by Steve Steransak, (3 hits including a
big 1st inning HR), Chris Yee (3 hits), Frank Padovano (3 hits, all doubles).
Luke Nacca, (3 hits including another 1st inning HR) and Lou Rivera (3 hits).
Adding to the hit parade were Justin Doyle with 2 hits including his
6th HR of the playoffs, and Al Genova and Chris Morrison, with 2 hits each.
The true star of the night was the defense, which was led by Lou Rivera, who
made multiple Sports Center plays. The lock down outfield of Fernando Diaz,
Hector Munoz, Al Genova, Justin Doyle and Frank Padovano shored up the
Douglas defense. The battery of Rich Gaul and Chris Yee kept the Deegan
offense off balance all night, as Rich G picked up the final W of the year.
This championship is dedicated to Douglas VW teammate Harold Zayas, who
was lost to cancer in May of this year. |
